Initially a simple abstract triptych piece, Happy New Year 2012 evolved to include a number of themes including materialism, spirituality, and wisdom. Blinding greed, conveyed with the ideal woman carrying a shopping bag, is placed in variance to inevitable ruin, as represented by the chain and ticking bomb. Playing a double role, the bomb is set in place of a pupil for the overlooking eye "watching" the bomb, representative of spiritual vision, and guiding sight. In line with this theme, the right panel contains a gift box, holding an aspired enlightenment and mysteries of what is to come with the new era; as 2012 is said to be the end of the age of darkness, beginning an age of enlightenment with spiritual growth and harmony mentally, environmentally, and technologically. Providing a foundation and background for the piece, the white of the eye pops with shades of navy, azure, and hints of sky, while also hinting at conflicts through time—wars, environmental degradation, human and spiritual disconnect. The color inversion of the iris and sclera creates a third eye—the site of wisdom where one can reach a deeper, divine self.
