About The Artwork
This abstract artwork is depicted as a geometric shape, the rectangle, a variation of the square, an iconic motive approached by many artists. The square is a construction of a “perfect” shape. The rectangular as a variation, is described as a quadiliteral with four right angles, where all of the angles are equal (360°/4 = 90°), in art the shape goes into dialogue with the expression of the artist. The rectangular shape is painted with goldpaint, resting on a dark orange layer beneath, the depiction has clear textural visibility. Gold as a treasured metal, found in art objects from cultures all over the world, has been connected to the sun and with wealth, as well as spirituality, transcendence and even the afterlife. Gold has been used in art depictions for centuries, often as expressions of otherworldly splendor, the holy, the sublime, exaltedness of great excellency or beauty. In modern times, gold is likelydende to be associated with prosperity, fortune and success. In a multidimensional world, art brings visibility to different viewpoints. As an artist with a minority background, I will present artistic expressions from the viewpoint of the Kveni people in the north of Norway. The Kvens as a people belongs to the cap of north, the kvens was originally situated in the north of Finland and Sweden, in Tornedalen and Bottenviken, and goes far back in our history, Many kvens lived in the north of Norway, and became a minority, with a different language and culture. The Kveni people experienced Norwegianizing in modern time, suppression from the government. Very few were to inherit their culture in modern time because of the suppression. I will try to understand what it means for a human being to loose identity and culture this way. I will also try to understand more deeply the historical roots of the Kveni people, like my grandmother, the last person in my line, to speak the Kveni language. Thematically, works are found within a conceptual tradition, or as representations of the stories of the Kveni people and their historical landscapes. This page will change as I start to bring forward new works, in line with the artistic statement.
