About The Artwork

"Free Run," 2010. Acrylic on canvas (painting) 56.8" H x 52.6" W (144.3 x 133.7 cm) / Organic Realism (style) "Free Run" is a simply breathtaking triumph of Jay Worth Allen. The artist has opened a life-sized doorway from which God-created equine beauty encapsulates strength and power--the very heart of four horses being a horse flows from the canvas, indwelling the viewer, who now, also knows what it means to be a horse, Free. Appropriately named, it is the vanguard work from his latest horse series (2010-2012). To accomplish the magnificent imagery of horses running through rain-soaked earth, Jay Worth Allen used white and black acrylic paint; combining the two, the eye sees various shades and hues of grays, creating the illusion of subtle hues of blue, and to some, the illusion of faint light beige illuminating from the canvas on which this masterpiece lives. As with the other pieces in this collection, the significance of this piece is profound. An exquisite technical accomplishment, in particular, this work culminates the artist's move into a deeper plane of the fons et origo which the he paints -- refreshing, unabashed freedom, unencumbered by human conditioning -- where, if one listens, the very breath of God can be heard. A bit of history about horses . . . In the late 1990's, a collector living in Kennebunkport, Maine (who also owned a 10,000 acre ranch in the "hill country" of Texas) wanted a painting of the magnificent Arabian horses bred on his ranch. He commissioned J. Worth Allen to do the painting. (Shortly after receiving the initial commissioned work, the collector turned patron commissioned several additional pieces from the artist.) Which led to the creation of an awe-inspiring series of series (at least three distinct "horse" series) comprised of works spanning over a decade and a half that have been acquired by international as well as national collectors over the years. Abbreviated Listing of Collections / Locations for works in this series: Original Commission(s) [Private Collection] (Kennebunksport, ME); Robert H. Regarding Charity: "Stormy Monday" 2002. Acrylic on canvas painting (60.0" H x 40.0" W). "2002 Destination Dreamland Auction" benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. At a starting bid of $9,500, this work helped to raise over $100,000.00 for the charity, an amount more than the charity has ever received during the Memphis auction. Purchased by Mr. and Mrs. M. Ledbetter. — Artist Statement — I was born. When I was about 6, I started drawing. Later, I started painting. That's still what I'm doing. What I know, I put into my work. I am interested in visible or tangible things that ARE, rather than Opinion. In my work, there are pre-formed, conventional, depersonalized, factual elements — impartial objects. I am concerned with the wholeness of a thing remaining within the boundaries of knowledge. It is within this boundary that I strive to conceal and reveal known objects at the same time. We have an existing language of words, signs, symbols, shapes, formulas, treatises, poems and the like — whole bodies of belief and knowledge that can, presumably, describe and penetrate anything and everything. Yet, I am forced to recognize that the system which enables me to form a piece of art and to think coherently cannot define how I uniquely think or feel, or even how I picture myself and everything outside myself. The plane of my work has always been real things — REAL MOMENTS RESTING IN TIME, where the ideational and perceptual worlds intersect to form image, idea, icon, and space, and — where I, and therefore the viewer, is projected through to another reality. Technique is inextricably tied to the content of my work. By working in all mediums, I work with numerous techniques. As a painter, acrylic is my medium of choice. My 3D & sculptural materials range from chicken wire to wood to concrete blocks to whatever material I find in my field of sight. The methods I use in printmaking (woodblock, silkscreen, blueprints, lithographs) all combine multiple processes. For me there is no hierarchy among these mediums and techniques; yet, drawing is the foundation for all my work. It’s is the way I speak the best, the clearest. — Brief Bio — On March 6 (the anniversary of Michelangelo’s birthday), J. Worth Allen (“Jay”) was born in Daylight, Tennessee. He grew up in Austin. Studied in Memphis, London, Oxford, New York, Los Angeles—. Has exhibited in New York, Texas, California, London, Edinburgh, France, and beyond. At 16, he was accepted into the top 3 art schools in the nation, each, with full scholarships: Pratt Institute/Fine Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Art Academy in Memphis, which won out (via a cartographical nudge from his dad).
