About The Artwork

This work, which depicts a habitat at the Fort Worth Zoo, straddles between stylization and naturalism. In my experimentation with color and shapes, I've drawn on influences stretching back to the Northern Renaissance till the present. The zoo habitat is a favorite subject of mine as it has the potential to be rich with metaphorical meaning. One way to interpret the scene would be that the idyllic setting presents us with a tense conflict between our need for safety and security and our search for freedom and liberation.

Douglas Darracott is an artist working in the Dallas area. Broadly, his work addresses a sense of place and displacement by depicting habitats designed for both humans and animals. He is interested in how space is designated in the creation of such habitats.
