My mind has been so full of worry, constantly revolving like a broken record around what's in the past and what the future may hold. There is a buzzing irritating noise that sounds like a lawn mower and I'm not even aware that its there and that it has been slowly driving me crazy. I'm not even cognizant of how much turmoil is there until it stops....the rhythmatic motion of the waves and soft sound of the water on the sand suddenly snaps me back into myself and I stare. The tide is turning. Finally my mind goes still and the calm within takes over. It's amazing how busy we can be and so trapped in our heads that we can't even see what's in front of us until something makes us pause and listen and fully open our eyes to what's around us. I will forever be thankful for the sound of water on sand and the effect it has on me....I think I'm going to go paint some more..... that seems like a good idea....thank you for looking.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
