About The Artwork

In the western part of the Indian subcontinent, 250 kilometers from its southernmost point, the city of Cochin is on the coast. On both sides of the narrow bay, the shore is framed by unusual fishing nets, made in Chinese style. Although this invention has been several centuries old, almost no changes have taken place in its design or use. With the help of these networks, fishermen continue to procure food for their families and for many other people. The catch, obtained with the help of one such network, is enough to feed the whole village. Networks are also very beautiful, especially when you look through them at the golden rays of the morning sun or the evening sky. The huge Chinese networks are fixed on a support and have counterweights, allowing to lift a network with a catch. When networks are no longer needed for work, they are raised from the water together with the frame. Catching starts early in the morning and lasts four to five hours. The networks are carefully immersed in water. To do this, the fishermen adjust the position of the weights attached to the opposite end of the counterweight, or the captain of the fishing team passes along the central beam of the network. The network is under water for 5 to 20 minutes, after which it is gradually raised, scooping up the fish that swam close to the shore. For many years, the captain has already learned to determine the moment when you need to pull out the network. After the captain's signal, a team of five or six men begins to pull on the ropes to which the sinkers are tied, thereby raising the nets. First, the ends of the network are on the surface. The network looks like a bowl in which the fish swim. What a delight fishermen experience! After a good catch they pat each other on the back, showing their joy. Then the fish will be sold to merchants, housewives and casual tourists.
