'Filomena - Guardian of the Spanish Quarter' Painting

This portrait is essentially a double portrait... The oil painting was shortlisted for and won the Scottish Portrait Award 2023 Second Prize. Created in 2023 it documents a meeting with Filomena, a local of the Spanish Quarter are of Naples in Italy. Whilst travelling in Italy in 2022, I invited the elderly lady to pose for me on the step of her front door. Many of the doors of the quarter are covered with murals by the the street artist Cyop and Kaf, so I decided to include one in my work. The image looks like some kind of soldier or guardian. Is he protecting Filomena, or is the old lady his custodian? After our meeting, I penned the following: “Crouching at the threshold, we talked in her mother tongue. She sat as still as a sentry, although her eyes darted with each sentence I uttered with foreign inflection. We bonded over exchanged names and an interest in each other's existence. She was Filomena - Guardian of the Spanish Quarter.” Naples, June 2022. The painting comes framed in a wooden floating frames painted green.
