About The Artwork
My initial intention behind Escape was simply to experiment with my application of paint. The title of the painting refers to this 'escape' from my usual style, as oppose to referring to anything literal in the painting. However, it has since developed into a themed exhibition idea I have, concerning our desires to escape from the sometimes claustrophobic, oppressive, and grey urban lives we inhabit; our internal and external manifestations of that longing, and how both contrast through the literal, and through reverie.

I was born in the Rep. of Ireland, but currently work as a freelance Illustrator in central Birmingham, UK. My artistic approach applies traditional methods; with emphasis on loose, figurative line work, combined with a painterly style. My favoured medium is oil, although I sometimes render my paintings using a combination of oil and acrylic. I particularly enjoy creating illustrations that explore the human form, and where possible, paintings with a definite sense of narrative; characters that speak directly to the viewer, often dark and theatrical.
