Endgame Painting

Inspired by the Netflix show Queens Gambit. During lockdown, the internet for many, including myself, was indispensable; an essential way of connecting with the outside world. Part of this experience was online streaming music, podcasts,film… each other. Soaking up this source of stimuli, certain scenes caught my eye and I found myself reaching for my sketchbook and drawing the unfolding drama. Through catching these universal experiences, I realised I was reacting to what for many was the zeitgeist of 2020 and I was inadvertently reacting to the new norm, the monumental social change in a 16:9 ratio. For me, I like the interplay of the abstract with the representational; how some parts of the painting when isolated and close up, look like abstract paintings, which draw the viewer in and yet from a distance have a sense of reality. The painting is textural, with a subtle background and paint swirls using a variety of paint mediums to create an intricate multi-layered surface, which is broken and reformed time and time again to create subtle turns of value and detail.
