About The Artwork
A silent moment in a quiet cafe in East Berlin. I came upon this space during a trip and reconnaissance mission to find great spaces to draw and paint. I was drawn to the way the industrial interior of this cafe contrasted with the two characters and their spots of color--like two parakeets--perched at the very end of the cafe. Berlin has a particular light like most northern countries, and it carries with it an entire atmosphere of the city. I loved the play of the linear perspective inside compared to the still somewhat gritty and worn exterior that was characteristic of East Berlin decades ago. I am often compared to Edward Hopper by many people who view my work and this painting in particular seems to elicit some of his focus and stylistic techniques.
