I made this painting as part of The Contemporary Indigenous Collection, where I interviewed people I met on my travels around South America to uncover it's true face; its influences and global diversity. I asked them if the native indigenous culture was present in their lives and how. About South America, I can say that sometimes I feel that I’ve been an inca before, crossing all this area, sleeping in the desert, feeling the ground, animals, plants. When I visit some places around San Pedro in Atacama desert I just have a picture in my mind of walking through all this space. Sometimes I want to cry because my soul remembers some things from the past, remember these places. Difficult to explain but just emotions from the depth of mine.” The origins of Atacameño culture can be traced back to 500 AD. At the start of the 15th century, the Atacameño were conquered by the Incas, who introduced a new social order; the Inca sun cult and various customs including coca leaves. The Inca regime constructed roads from the Salar de Atacama to what is now north east Argentina.
