About The Artwork
I am inspired by the effects of the three dimensional plain showcasing collage materials that create various textured effects. The juxtaposition of the raised and flat surface create various forms, lines and shapes that are in cohesion with one another. The viewer gets to experience the effects of the materials jutting out of the flat surface as though participating in the theater of the various dimensions of the canvas. My practice focuses on using recycled materials that would have been discarded but have been stylized into painting in a geometric and abstract expressionistic genre.

Wendy Cohen is a Sydney-based artist whose art practice focuses on the relationship of colour, shapes, lines and forms with the shapes of realistic components that is communicated in a painterly abstracted language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of shapes, colours and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are manifested that bring attention to the surface and materiality of the contents of each painting. Observation, intuition and imagination are key to her process as she responds to the magnificence and interconnectedness of the world. But most importantly, Wendy welcomes the viewer into the space of the painting in order to participate in the mystery and wonderment of her works that she creatively translates onto the canvas with a syncopated beat and rhythm.
