Clearcut Painting

This tree stood alone as a stark witness to the felling of this part of the forest. Harvested for the pine wood, its neighbours lay stacked nearby as it stood alone under ceaseless wind. Painted alla prima, this piece is based on drawings and sketches I made while in the hills above the River Spey. The surface is unvarnished, with lightly textured paint and while the image does not carry around the edges, the edge is finished in a sympathetic tone allowing it to be hung unframed if desired. I want the viewer to empathise with this courageous tree, to feel its unwillingness to give up. I also hope they enjoy the almost liquid nature to the sky, that suggests movement and fluidity. I like to paint my skies in as few sittings as possible, especially in this case, as it allows the subject to maintain a certain voice, or nature that is akin to what it is representing. I also find this true with water. I feel if too much time is taken, sometimes it can render it static.
