About The Artwork
Seeing Rothko's Seagram murals for the first time at Tate Modern was a great inspiration to me. It was the first time I had thought of painting 'emotion' within an abstract work. Most of my abstract works are inspired by the grand scale of geological nature - the mountains, crags and rock formed by the powerful forces of volcano and plate movement. This painting reflects the insignificance of the human in relation to a great geological rift, or chasm. The narrow beam of light in the distance beckons one towards it and to freedom from the confines of the chasm. It had to be painted quickly to maintain the emotion while it evolved. Oil paint daubed and dripped with solvent depict the chasm walls. Subdued colour was added to the dark wall areas to suggest nearness. And a pure stripe of white delineates the end of the cleft.
