About The Artwork

There she was, alone, suspended in pain. Choked, hunched over, waiting for the seven-week blueberry sized fetus to pass. . . blueberry blues uses the playful and satirical horror to capture desperate scenes of an abortion whilst disembodying the artist’s recent history. Through the lens of Afro-surrealism, a genre in which absurdity, Blackness, and an ever-looming sense of dread not only coexist but are impossible to separate, blueberry blues is a commentary and natural response to existing in a world overshadowed by structural racism. People worldwide face threats to their reproductive rights. Shockingly, the abortion rate among black women stands at 3-4 times higher than that of white women. Even more distressing are the gynaecological healthcare experiences of black women, which often underscore a troubling pattern of being disregarded, unseen, and misunderstood all thanks to implicit biases. blueberry blues distils the current zeitgeist, offering a revelation about a hidden or often overlooked part of abortion – the Black experience.

Hope River, b. 1994, is a Black-British artist currently living and working in Aotearoa New Zealand. She works in the mediums of painting, drawing, and poetry. Born to an English mother and Rwandan father, her art addresses identity, race, and spirituality. Compelled by personal experiences and Afrocentric folklore, River’s aesthetic blends stark silhouetted scenes, a hallucinatory colour palette, and Afro-surrealism, confronting racism and its ongoing impact on the Black psyche. - website: www.hoperiverartist.com instagram: hope_river_artist
