This piece is sold unframed and is oil on board prepared with high quality gesso primer. Chiaroscuro…a combination of the two Italian words for light and dark. I am profoundly influenced by the work of Caravaggio and his use of chiaroscuro during the late 16th century. With this piece I’m exploring this technique applied to everyday objects. My work is a constant search for the best way to express an emotionally charged state of existence felt by us all where by the bold contrast of light and dark hints towards a kind of creative tension. For me the highs and lows of our everyday lives and the disparity between emotions like love and separation, expectation and reality is what fuels my artistic exploration.

Born in South Africa and currently living in France. I originally trained as an interior designer but changed tracks later in life when I was seduced by oil paint. I am fascinated by the emotional bonds that we have with decorative objects and interior spaces, becoming elevated when we capture these on film or art. I am self taught and work mainly in oil, influenced by the Dutch masters and contemporary Realist movement.
