About The Artwork

Blue Resonance elicits feelings of peacefulness and infinite space. There is a subtle central light that radiates toward the dark blue-black vignette giving the viewer a sense of nature. The painting comprises thousands of delicate lines, flecks and dots which weave together a tapestry of vibrating energy. One viewer who saw the piece commented, "These paintings are amazing. I was enthralled. I just sat there - nobody but my husband and I were there at the time - it was so quiet, they drew me in and I got lost. So beautiful.” To create her "monochromes" Thompson use a technique similar to mandala sand painting. She dips a small fan brush into paint and tap it against a stick to create delicate dots and splatters. For hours, she taps until the canvas is covered with layers of dots, lines and flecks. The resulting image is a homogeneous field – an energised labyrinth of patterns, lines, and vibrations. She finishes the work with a dark border around the vibrating field to contain its movement. From a distance the monochrome work appears orderly and unified. Yet up close, is revealed chaotic patterns and particles moving in all directions like matter spinning in space. The monochromes express molecular reality – the reality manifesting as bodily sensations pulsating, throbbing, prickling, tingling, and manifesting inside me. Thompson hopes that as the viewer gazes at the field of vibrating color, he or she will become aware sensations and their own reality.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, a soothing calming influence on the mind rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” - - Henri Matisse. Inspired by Matisse’s artistic quest to uplift and energise the viewer, I strive to create light and colour filled paintings that illuminate, soothe and vitalise the human spirit. Perhaps my appreciation for abstraction comes from living in Canada surrounded by mountains, lakes, sky and forests. Nature continually presents me with soothing colours, exciting designs, delightful patterns, intriguing patinas and infinite space. Nature presents light, dark, shadows and movement which evoke emotions of mystery, wonder and love. My goal as a painter is to use nature’s abstract elements like colour and space to capture a particular feeling, a feeling of unity, passion or peacefulness. I strive to create painterly abstractions that mysteriously resonate with my deeper self and hopefully with the soul of the viewer. I believe art is a way to communicate one soul to another.
