On female power and white privilege. On the knowledge that my success will always be at the expense of others, however indirectly. On interdisciplinary feminism and queenliness. On one hand it is beautiful to see a woman in power, but on the other, she then becomes complicit in the violent system. How do we be our best queens and empower others as well as ourselves? The miniature portrait is of Maria Teresa d'Austria, who was “apostolic king of Hungary” and is sometimes referred to as “he”. Her other titles included: reigning archduchess of Austria, reigning queen of Bohemia and Croatia and Slavonia, ruling duchess of Parma and Piacenza, reigning duchess of Milan and Mantua and also grand duchess consort of Tuscany and empress consort of the Holy Roman Empire.

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experiments in semi-abstraction and sumi-e painting methods and philosophy. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
