William Bartram was often commissioned to explore and record natural wonders of the Southern states. Famous as an explorer and wildlife observer, Bartram was also a botanist. His drawings of carnivorous plants like the Hooded Pitcher Plant made a special connection with me. I have observed some of the same species in the Putnam County Florida area, and felt the thrill of discovery in having found them in the wild. Many carnivorous species like pitcher plants and sundews require pristine natural conditions to thrive, since they are incompatible with tap water and pollution. Bartram probably saw a lot more of the delicate plants when he explored the Putnam County area via the Saint Johns River back in 1774. Some of them may have been in the low-lying banks of a spring-fed creek making for an irresistible scene to the paddling Bartram. This is what I imagined for "Bartram Shares Florida".
