Archeology of Style Painting

This project starts from the observation of the achitecture in Bogotá in the 30`s. It developed in some areas as an imitation and adaptation of european architecture. In Europe, these styles were an affirmation of political identity, whilst in Colombia they were used as a way of progressing in the design and construction of housing for the upper class. I made 4 paintings that ellude to the typical decorative wall papers used in those years to decorate interior spaces. These paintings look almost identical but actually have subtle diferences. This, as a way to make a reference to the act of imitating, copying, reproducing a model as it was at the time when adopting european architectural styles in the new urban landscape of Bogotá. All this adaptations have a very symbiotic process as they were made using the materials and resources found and available in this territory. The pattern in the paintings was designed using the Tudor heraldic flower, The french Fleur de Lis, the spanish Granade fruit and a Pepper plant as my own emblem. Even though, the four pieces have the same pattern and color hues, each one is made with different layers, priming processes and fabrics which varies the final result.
