About The Artwork

Inspired by Filipino folklore “Ang White Lady.” 18 x 24 in Acrylic on wood panel “Ang White Lady.” is painted using acrylic on wood panel. It is a medium-sized painting on an artist’s high quality basswood panel. The painting is made layer by layer through masking. As a result of this process, each painted element is levitated from the surface of the wood. Combining the polished edges with the expressive mark making within each object creates a vibrant contrast and feeling of balance. ____________________________________ Ang (The) White Lady is a well known figure of folklore in the Philippines. Depicted as a woman dressed in all-white, she is known to haunt the roadside where she had tragically passed. This piece was created for my solo exhibition Mga Hunghong Sa Diwata (Whispers of Spirits): Mga Hunghong sa Diwata is a show about personal memories and family stories about Bisaya deities, spirits, and spiritual practices. Growing up, I dearly remember late nights with family. We would gather over food and tea, and they would tell us about dreams of snakes with important messages, dwende, good and bad witches, ghosts, and other creatures. I was obsessed with these stories because they were cited as the reasons my elders had epiphanies or made major life decisions. And absorbing this, I learned to make sense of the world based on these spirits as well. Through creating this show, I’ve made many connections with Filipinos all over the world that practice Diwatahan/Anituo, who have helped me uncover the Bisayan history that is buried in this folklore.

I am the first born child of an immigrant. My mother immigrated to Montana in the 1990’s after having an arranged marriage with my father. As their mixed-race child, I reflect on my upbringing by visualizing memories and shared family stories through the subtle and effective body language of hands. I am interested in capturing the seemingly-mundane moments of how culture persists and is practiced through generations in the diaspora.
