About The Artwork

This artwork stemmed from a memory of a 'self-portrait', thinking back to the uncomfortable feeling experienced when coerced into a school picture. The dazzling bright lights, the photographer politely bossing you around, your class-mates peering at you as you squirm around on the stall trying to ensure your posture is of standard, without looking too uncool. The piece is a revisit to this memory; a mature version, if you will. I had recently seen an old school photo of myself and was particularly humoured by the sheer discomfort that spilled-out from the 2D image. This artwork is a nod to a child-hood memory, through a contemporary lens. Through creating this piece, I wished to draw similarities between childhood and adulthood; but also, the process provided time for self-reflection- recognising the inherent differences between the things that made me anxious as a child and now as an adult. Naturally the differences are vast; the triggers are naturally a little more loaded and of a darker nature, but the principle and mental/physical effects remain the same, and that is something that has (weirdly?) brought me joy. I think it has a little to do with the fact I survived anxiety-induced situations as a child, so will continue to as an adult!

Gretel Warner portrays the female nude as a lens into the complexities of womanhood within our fast-paced, social media-centric world. Her mission is to reclaim the iconic representation of the nude, celebrating the female form authentically and candidly without the filters imposed by social media's glare. Drawing inspiration from personal encounters, feelings, and recollections, her emotionally charged paintings often evolve into abstract and dysmorphic forms. Within her practice, Gretel seeks solace from the whirlwind of both digital and physical realms, offering a space for both herself and her audience to pause and reflect. Exploring emotions through a vivid spectrum of colors and alternating between refined and expressive brushwork, she delves into the fluidity of identity and the ever-shifting nature of the human psyche and physique.
