About The Artwork

Constructing her compositions by reflecting her own and other people's shadows on the canvas, Görkem bases the subject of the exhibition on his ongoing doctoral thesis titled "Questioning Myths and Unconscious Images in the Artist's Production"; at Mimar Sinan FAU. In Magnum Opus, the third painting in the Alchemy series, matter has now turned into gold with the help of mercury. Reaching the elixir of salvation is a masterpiece image that manifests itself in written and oral literature in forms such as the eternal youth elixir that Psyche managed to get from Persephone after the hard struggles in the underground, or the immortality elixir that Gilgamesh managed to get from the underground, the holy grail. At the end of this transformation, in which the element Mercury is the catalyst, we are in the "Rubedo"; stage dominated by red colors, the sunlight illuminating all the shadows and painting them underneath. It also bears traces of the previous stages of alchemy, the dawn, the bleaching (albedo) and the yellowing (citrinitas).
