'Abstraction Continues as a Detail of Reality' Painting

I have often explained to my art students in class that one idea or concept for defining and explaining what an ‘abstract’ work of art is can in fact be viewed or interpreted as a fragment of the whole composition or state of ‘reality’ taken out of context and magnified to become the impression that stands for itself. In other words, if I were to paint or draw an individual or some aspect of the natural world in a figurative or realistic manner, but I then extract and blow-up a detail of a face, a shoulder, a part of a shoe, a tiny swatch of the design or crease on their shirt or blouse, a leaf, a cluster of branches, etc., etc and create a total composition of this detail as my main subject of focus, ‘viola’ an abstract work of art is generated. In the abstract genre, of this composition, it could have originally derived from the form, shape or textured landscape of a larger figurative, more recognizable image that has been enlarged and isolated, and now the fragmentary detail becomes the totality of something new and recycled that represents a new unified reality and definition of a complete reconfigured art composition.
