About The Artwork
To make this painting, I drove the A4, one of the main Dutch high ways, while making a video. Back in my studio I took a still out of the video and started painting. Leaving out other cars, only taking the essential shapes. This is one painting of 7 'Modern Cathedrals'. They represent that our infrastructures are huge prestige projects in which a lot of time, money and people are involved, the same as Cathedrals where in there time. One of the 'Modern Cathedrals' was purchased by the Amsterdam Museum.

Carolien Wissing (1976) makes canvases in a sober color palette, on which major architectural, abandoned buildings and landscapes can be identified. Twenty years ago Carolien moved from the countryside to the city to study at the Academy of Fine Art. She graduated as an ‘Architectural designer’ but during her study she found out, she was much more fascinated by absorbing the atmosphere of environment. Carolien gets inspired by the peri-urban fringe where the existence of culture fades and slowly merges into the landscape of nature.
