About The Artwork
"A Warrior Song" is an image that results from a battle-based process, more so than a somber one. From its piercing color to its unrelenting energy, the piece became laden with the fight, eagerness, and determination that its completion demanded. I always sing throughout my painting process, but this work had me producing beats of my brush against canvas and heavy breaths as I lunged to sling paint across its corners. These sounds became the basis for its title, "A Warrior Song," as the image hinged upon my embodying of a warrior—that is, my persevering, attempting, failing, and re-attempting in spite of physical and visual fatigue. The final work is a direct trace of body and mind, challenged to attain a victory.

Taylor O. Thomas is an American painter using gestural painting as a means of making manifest human tendencies, ways of seeing, and the interconnection between the body and the mind. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and private collections across the United States, Italy, Spain, Singapore, and China. In 2012, Thomas graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College with a BA in Studio Art. She was then awarded a Graduate Fellowship by the University of South Florida, earning her MFA in 2019. Thomas is the recipient of an inaugural Innovate Artist Grant, a Peripheral Vision Publication Fellowship, a two-time role as Publication Juror for Friend of the Artist, a Regional Artist Project Grant by the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a residency fellowship to attend Benaco Arte in Sirmione, Italy.
