About The Artwork
‘A Slip of a Smile’ is very red. I still wonder what I am painting as I continue this on-going series of smile paintings. More than merely friendly a smile can be loving, fake or fierce, it can be subservient, it can be dominant. A smile may mean, ‘please’, as often as it grins out a threat. The display of interlocking emotions that is a smile is a magical expression and so much more than the anatomical stretching of jaw, muscle, and crinkle of eye. This painting started as a series of transparent washes, but very quickly the need for the ruby red lip colour and white teeth to be opaque became obvious. The vertical striations were unintentional but felt appropriate as a smile lights a face from chin to crown, as well as side to side.
