About The Artwork

‘A Difficult Gift to Receive’ is a pivotal work within the history of my practice. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this painting would signify a change of direction and content that characterises much of the large scale work made since. A focus on propagating a delicate landscape comprised of subtly interacting forms that only flirt with a definite composition, an emphasis placed upon having large swathes of colour occupy the canvas and allowing for a reductionist approach to interruptions lay atop that suggest - rather than insist upon any directionality - all encourage subjective interpretation that actively involve the viewer(s) in constantly evolving manners. There is an ambiguous air of trepidation laced through this painting. The first work made in sobriety, it operated for me as a space for exploration into a newfound state of clarity and so is imbued with a surviving quality of optimism and relief.

Luke’s works serve as document to a sensitive engagement between painter and the painted. Envisioned as systems, the paintings present a lineage of negotiation concerned with temporality and the limitations of compatibility in regards to visual information. Obvious anchorages in relationships between colour and form provide ground for intricate collisions where autobiographical material tussles in the rigour of foundational considerations of what is required to construct a picture. Delicate, harmonious expanses are propagated with the distinct intention of subjecting to an eclectic array of treatments to produce challenging and comprehensive reflections upon the human condition.
