About The Artwork

ATSUKO CHANDLER Man’s disposition to harness the energy of the laws of nature has left an irrevocable mark on the world. As we attempt to take charge of the mechanics of natural law it is apparent that our actions are born from an initial explosion and subsequent confluence of the colossal forces of nature. Our relentlessly expanding desire to enhance our quality of life, places great strain on the resources of the planet. As much as this is the preoccupation in the media, it is a reality that is hard to truly assimilate into the function of our lives. Atsuko Chandler is an artist that, whilst making no revolutionary claims about this situation, manages to compose a view of this realisation that offers a holistic paradigm shift in perception and captures the prodigious energies of the universe. Atsuko engages with a tactile understanding of energy and is conscious of its role in the birth of the cosmos. With a unique understanding of the processes of painting and a fluent yet subtle manipulation of the language of visual culture, Atsuko is keenly placed to provide a critique that suggests the unification of dichotomous tensions that began the process of progression towards a society that hopefully will embrace sustainable energy. Atsuko’s extensive work with painting has developed a sensitive intuition for the behaviour of the materials she chooses to work with. In fluid persuasion of this craft she takes up the visualisation of the birth of history, solar and sea power and its importance of the birth of life and visualises an aesthetic that reflects the beauty of of racial memory. Atsuko has refined paint into an irreducible voice that makes a powerful comment on the urgencies that befall the birth and the future of the globe. Atsuko Chandler graduated with an MA from Winchester School of Art following 5 years training in visual art in Switzerland. She has had several exhibitions in both the UK and Switzerland and continues to seek out further opportunities. An established natural portrait painter, the main body of her work is an exploration of nature, the cosmos and the birth and development of mankind. Her previous exhibition 'New Energy Summer' at the Winchester College of Art, together with a diptych at Winchester Cathedral closed to collective acclaim for a new and vibrant talent in Modern art. I am interested in natural energy sources and in demonstrating the importance of considering what we might do after the current energy sources are depleted.

My dream is to see how we can ensure that we leave a safe and healthy future environment for our children and grandchildren.

I am working to create from natural resources, their connection with earths gravity, powerful and engaging images and life experience all united by a shared critical interest in the writings of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. A Thousand Plateaus

I create my paintings from studio practice directly from the pallet, in brilliant colours and physical expressions, searching for consistency of folding and unfolding strata reflecting the geophysical nature of the topic.

I hope through my work to draw attention to the importance of the sustainable energy crisis and to engage the general public in the importance of investing in sustainable energy sources for the future - now.
