About The Artwork

This artwork was created as part of the Breezeway series that was exhibited in a solo show in Chicago, IL at Very Serious Gallery in September of 2022. The exhibition was built around Behr’s 2022 Color of the year - Breezeway. Behr describes this color as able to evoke “feelings of coolness and peace, while representing a desire to move forward and discover,” and, similarly, this exhibition marks a transition in momentum in Britni’s work. Her first major solo show, Breezeway presents a thoughtful dissection of color theory and a playful but experienced presentation of abstraction. Mara applies paint by throwing, pushing, spraying, and scraping the material. Creating space for meditation around the process; new layers are deliberately not added until the former has completely dried. Titleling each painting numerically, reflecting the date that they were completed, she nods to the encapsulation of movement, observation, and energy on the day each work was produced. Mara’s meditative and physical practice captures ephemeral moments in her life, translating feelings of transition, control, freedom, growth, and balance onto the canvas.

Britni Mara, is a visual artist living and working in Chicago, IL. She graduated in 2013 from Bradley University with a BFA in Studio Art. She did post-graduate work at the Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy in 2014 and has been passionately creating fine art ever since. For Britni, manufacturing work that embodies meaning is the purpose of creating. She is truly in love with abstraction and incites thought in her abstract work by altering her mediums. This allows her to dissect thought and provoke conversation, without straying away from her implicit practice of abstraction. Her artwork can be described as a dance between chaos and the controlled movement of paint. Alongside her personal art business, the artist is fiercely focused on creating an abundant resource network for Womxn creatives in Chicago. In the Spring of 2021, Britni opened The Hallway Gallery; an alternative gallery space dedicated to showing Womxn visual artists. Alongside the gallery, Britni has launched The Female Association of Creative Entrepreneurs (F.A.C.E.). The organization’s mission is to create a safe-space for women and non-binary creatives to gather for networking, professional development, collaboration and exhibition opportunities across creative disciplines.
