About The Artwork

Go you! (Kneeling Female Aztec Figure, fifteenth century) Selected finalist at ZONTA Female Art Awards 2023. Once there was a way, now it's changed. I provide an art piece that reflects on the politics of gender and identity. On the importance to empower women in the creative sector. It is also an interpretation on diaspora based on my migration experience. This painting was created on mere instinct. I know who I am and where I come from, and my responsibility towards a cultural change. I have a strong sense of identity in a country that is made of several ethnic groups, my task is to use art as a powerful tool to expand and redefine woman’s presence for future generations. The words “Go You” aim to encourage, motivate, reignite enthusiasm, enhance and motivate viewers to accomplish any dream or desire. I felt an attraction to this sculpture created by Aztecs in the fifteenth century. This sculpture depicts a lady wearing a simple skirt fastened around the waist. Circular ornaments around her ears. Her hair is wound around her head and held at the top. Her back turned to the viewer, no facial expressions, a stone, in neutral color, a simple female figure carved more than 500 years ago. Cotton thread is seen worked in the most basic way, as a straight stitch. Embroidery had been considered women’s work, It was not only seen as a feminine activity but also thought of a mindless hobby and not art; now that’s changed.

My name is Ynes, I am Latin-Kiwi full time artist, living in the beautiful South Island in Timaru - Te tihi o maru. I hail from Mexico and been in New Zealand - Aotearoa over ten years. I am married to a Timaru man that is also an artist. I create art with a few main ideas in my mind, keep it simple and never boring. They help me complete the puzzle of creating. My style is bold, colourful, and smart. I am passionate about life and happiness. I am a disciplined artist that enjoys a day of solitude and work. I am focused on equity, and achievement in high contrasts. I held my first Solo Exhibition at the Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū in November 2021. Since then I have relocated with my husband to our house in Timaru and build a 50 m2 studio where I currently work full time.
