The ‘We Women’ installation looks at feminine expression as it shifts under the impact of western culture. This work examines how expectations and ’place' can taint our experience. Silhouettes of women are set against collected objects unearthed from the past. The artists hand cut hardwood figures in various tones speak to the construct of race. Each piece is created to be a jewel on its own. When strung together, like paper doll cutouts, they start to tell an important story. The installation begins with the original ecstasy of being connected to our pure natural joy, from there the work weaves through some of the many manifestations culture and expectation have on our expression. The finali panel crescendos with the power found by reconnecting with our fiercest nature. The panels are intended to be hung in a continuous line down a long wall. Measurements listed are an approximation of the finished hung installation of the 9 individual panels. See 'detail shots' for closeups and measurements of first panels. Other panel closeups available by scrolling through listings of individual pieces.
