Making baby dresses out of the extended part of a Sari was a family tradition for me. We used to make our own dresses and embroidery on our dresses, scarves, Shawls or Saris. I kept that Bangladeshi tradition in my art and used my own hair as the thread as part of my identity. Nonetheless, reading books for children, telling stories from books or reading bedtime stories is not a cultural practice in the country where I grew up. People use their delusions to make imaginary stories which are always far from the truth of life. Since children are not accustomed to reading books more often, children grow up knowing life is a bed of roses. They were introduced to the sugar-coated sides of the fairy tales, though mostly in verbal form. Children were not introduced to the harshness or violent part of the fairytale, not even with the resentment of real life. Reality is a combination of good and bad. My childhood was not an exceptional one. As a childless woman, I carry the same pain in a different form. But it is as sharp as a thousand needles. Life cannot always be a bed of roses though, but all the children deserve story time.

Canada
I am a Bangladeshi-born British interdisciplinary visual artist living and working in Canada. I organised many solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in different countries. My work is autobiographical in nature. I use the unique signature of my body to explore my identity in time and place. I use my hair as a thread and my fingertips as brushes during this process. I imprint my emotions on different surfaces to express the inimitable chaos of my inner and outer worlds.
