RIAAN VAN ZYL : move·mentˈmoovmənt OPENING 23 NOVEMBER 2012, 17:30 – 22:00 'NGR' is proud to be hosting 'move·ment . moovmənt' a leading solo exhibition of new artworks by Riaan van Zyl. As the artist comments: "The faster we move the less we see the details. We are missing the basics." Riaan slows down time by energetically hurling and pouring old car oil, charcoal and paint on different surfaces and presents us with static images that vibrate with movement. Riaan started adapting and reworking images from the first films, created in the late 19th century. These films established awareness of to the way people, animals, objects and ideas move. Through the creative thinking of people like Eadweard Muybridge, Louis le Prince and the Lumière brothers, to name a few, we were exposed to a new way of looking at life around us. Style, beauty and depth can be found in Riaan’s work, but also a slight madness. He plays with line and he experiments with a variety of subject matter and ideas. The movie 'Hugo' was released in 2011 and inspired the look and feel of Riaan's work even more. He started questioning people’s neglect to reflect the bombardment of basic image upon image that we take for granted in a Youtube world... "I create artworks in the hope of making people ‘pause’ and look more closely and differently at the world, to help them see ideas and objects around them in a de-constructed way. Everyone needs to take some time and look at the ordinary. In this way they will find things we take for granted interesting again." Riaan finds rhythm through sketching these old ‘cliched’ images. Most phrases/images/ideas are now considered clichéd where they were originally regarded as striking, but lost their power through overuse. Rhythm is movement in which some elements recur regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will seem like the beat of music. Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the artwork, often to a focal area. It can be directed along lines, edges, shapes and colour. Movement becomes rhythm through sketching and in this manner breaks the Cliché. Film has become part of our everyday lives, creativity is flowing and we are all becoming artists, politicians, journalists, designers… poets… simply by pointing our phones and cameras in different directions. This exhibition challenges the viewer to slow down just enough to see these everyday sights at a fraction of the speed.
