About The Artwork

This piece is one of a new and ongoing series of works using Conté Carrés (square) hard crayons on intentionally folded and creased art paper. There is almost a necessity to view these folded works with side-lighting, so the subtle three-dimensional nature of the folded paper reveals itself with tonal changes between the random angular planes in either light or shadow depending on the direction of the light source. My primary influence with this series is from the old fortifications of Vauban (1633-1707), the French general and engineer who planned the defenses of many strategic towns in France and Germany. I have created a deliberately confusing interpretation of one of his basic ideas and turned his “impregnable fortress” design features into a confusing set of walls and passages… as in a maze without a safe and sure direction of progress. If Vauban's works were ever to be breached and destroyed they may have looked shattered, like this, from above.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
