About The Artwork

James Small, is a portrait of a man who helped to inspire a collaborative art project with OIRSSS (Ontario Indian Residential School Support Services). This is the first of a series that will help to educate and document the stories of survivors of the Indian Residential School System. James was a respected member of the First Nations community in Moose Factory, Ontario. He was a residential school survivor, that desired and promoted justice for the wrongs that were suffered by the First Nations people during the Canadian Indian Residential School System's operation. He was a memorable man to the workers of OIRSSS; his portrait being the first of this series, is a tribute to his struggle for justice and the unforgettable impact he had on his friends at OIRSSS. It is my hope that this portrait has captured a sense of the beauty of this man's strength and courage, while the eyes will give a sense of the underlying pain and struggle that was felt. As an artist, it is a daunting task to attempt bring a sense of emotion and life to such an important story. I hope that I have been able to accomplish this with the portrait of James Small.
