About The Artwork

I can divide my works into two groups, two different stylistic lines but very personal and recognizable: that one of "color" paintings made with watercolor and china, and that one of paintings "pen" made with mixed media. I reached this style and compositional technique after several tests and experiments. Then I did not yet know that everything would be conveyed in these works but, looking back at all of my past production, I can recognize every key element that I brought forward in time, reworking it or not, to join them all in works like "Sea Horses. Each work can be divided into two main elements: that of instinct and that of reason. The instinctive / random sphere is represented by the collage, the rational one by the drawing. What I like to do is look for a harmony between all these opposing or conflicting elements, so that, put to the service of the artistic act, they are able to create a complete and balanced work, a harmony and a feature of one with each other. I start with matter, the element "primordial", casual, crude, imperfect, gestural...I use different kinds of collage paper: cutouts, paper, tissue paper, newspapers, bread paper etc ... are cards that I use or have used before, so are my. Trying to put myself in my paintings I prefer to buy less material as possible and use what I already have, what I use or that I used in my daily life, so that it will be reassembled in 'work. The collage is almost totally random and wants to create a base material and a rich surface of ripples that are fertile ground and inspiration for the organisation of the project. Collage does not limit the figure or does not just background but combines background and figure by creating a dialogue and a compenetration between the two elements; in this way the design expands in the background and "goes out" from its boundaries as if it was in continuous motion. The color that comes to the background is not a unique color but also there is a union and the different colors are creating a dirty white, warmer at some points, colder in others. They are stratifications of color such as ocher, siena, blue, green, gray, purple, then joined by white that encompasses all of them. The drawing is entirely realized to pen, to be precise with black Bic pensThis takes many hours of work and much patience, but this type of pen is perfect for both straight lines and to create shades of chiaroscuro. For some works I had already in mind more or less what would be the design for others I have entrusted to the ripples created with collage and imagination to create the shapes. These are "becoming" works: there is no project, there are no sketches, there is no pencil drawing on which to work on. After creating the background, I entrust myself to the pen, my hand, my sensitivity, and, through a sort of "psychic automation", the elements of the work arise. I like to say that this kind of design is a "meditative design, in which we are immersed in the act and focusing away from reality and being present at the same time. Animal or vegetable figures are born here, they often remind me of something primordial, something that is born and grows, moves, developing into infinite different forms. I can imagine any figure coming out of the picture and continuing its development out. I like to give my titles works like "Being Peacock", "Being a Horse" etc ...This is because I try to bring back the intimacy of the animal, its solar character, its beauty and strength, but also its dark, wild side, light and shade, its "animal essence". Drawing it I try to be that animal... In this case, the knowledge of the animal world, especially the equestrian, helps me, I remember the muscle mass, remember the anatomy, the movements, I remember the tactile sensation of the various parts of its body. I remember the small signs to be grasped to understand its non-verbal language. Therefore, "Being Animal" becomes the essence of the animal represented and a condition in representing it. Become the animal to catch the essence.
