About The Artwork

A sculptural silverpoint drawing on a gessoed oak block. 596 is the codename of the People's Republic of China's first nuclear weapons test, detonated on October 16, 1964, in the Lop Nur desert. Silverpoint means to draw with a silver wire, old masters used silverpoint and metalpoint to draw with before graphite had been discovered. When the pure silver wire is drawn across the gesso it leaves particles behind, much like when you scuff your ring in a white wall, meaning the drawing is actually made of silver. It is a very delicate process as mistakes cannot be rectified and the drawing is built up over many layers of silver.
