About The Artwork

Following the exploration of human forms of my previous work, ‘On the Top of the Little Mountain’ turns to focus on the landscapes and settings which they inhabit. This exhibition of abstract, other-worldly mountainous landscapes is inspired by the expansive plains of my birthplace. In this setting in which the horizon is interrupted only rarely by the vertical, traces of the mounds marking the sites of former indigenous lookouts provide evidence of a historical impulse to gain some elevation over this desolate setting. Evoking these mounds which haunt the landscapes of my imagination, the works in this exhibition conjure up a sense of nostalgia for place; for sites known and lost, or places unexperienced and nevertheless longed for with a sentimental and wistful affection. The sentinels and mountain-folk that inhabit these landscapes express a clear, far-sighted vision, and a desire to see and go beyond the confines of vast, empty distance. Under their watchful guardianship, myriad colours and forms accumulate in fantastical landscapes.

Influenced by colonial art as well as native indigenous artistic practices, my paintings are distinctly Latin American in their hybrid blending of both a European and a South American heritage. Using collage as my primary medium, I combine the whimsical elements of Naive art with the unexpected juxtapositions of Surrealism, creating an atmosphere of surprise, charm, and simplicity. Populated by disproportionate human figures, animals, and objects that tightly occupy reduced landscapes, my paintings draw on the native myths and legends of Latin America, and the decorative quality and tactile texture of the compositions resonate with traces of indigenous art and craft. The strong use of color and the patterns of clearly defined shapes afforded by the medium of collage give an air of childlike naivety and understated humor to my paintings which, created in series, offer narratives of the wonder and enchantment of human experience.
