About The Artwork

‘ Wфmen Against Fascism ’ Marian WILLIAMS January 2022 Mixed media composition on 195 x 130 x 4 cm canvas. Oil paint, acrylic paint, marker pen, transfer collage and paper collage. ‘ Wфmen Against Fascism ’, is a modern artwork inspired by Soviet propaganda posters, women’s rights, the fight against fascism and current political tendencies. It was created for the group exhibition ‘ RED ‘ in Saint Raphaël, France. The graphic image of an eye features on a black background. This black and white design, in German manifesto style, was created by Willy Petzold in 1931 for the International Hygiene exhibition in Dresden. In the foreground stands the powerful woman from Nina Vatolina’s propaganda poster: “Fascism, the Most Evil Enemy of Women”. The image is consistent with the original work, except for her face, which is halved. The woman, with her arms flung open and her wide stance reminds us of the figure of ‘Liberty’. This symbol of France, known as Marianne, painted by Eugène Delacroix in ‘ Liberty leading the People ’, holds the flag of the French Revolution, the tricolour, in one hand and a bayonetted musket in the other. In ‘Wфmen Against Fascism’ , Marianne echoes Nina Vatolina’s heroine of the people. The tricolour is reduced to two colours; red and pink. Roses float around the flag and seem to disappear into a faceless black space.

Born in Rotterdam in 1962, Marian Williams lives and works in France. Whilst recycling objects, authentic photos and original illustrations from vintage magazines and books, she creates dynamic, striking analog compositions in paint, collage and assemblage. Her work has been on show in France, England, Italy, Albania, the Netherlands, Serbia and in the USA.   The works, influenced by pop art, surrealism and dadaism, show originality and freshness, in which classical art, retro chic, and kitsch are combined in a challenging way. The artist's political engagement for the environment, women's rights, freedom and social justice, are recurring themes. Her story telling is sincere, expressed in various ways, sometimes minimalist, sometimes complex. 'When I was five years old I jumped in a bin at school to save schoolbooks from the 1950's which had been thrown away. Everything about these book was precious to me; the images, the letter type, the torn pages, the colours and the memories. They reflected the history of daily life gone by. They were art to me."
