About The Artwork
Inspired by Carravagio’s painting of the Fortune Teller (1594) as well as the childhood origami game of creating a folded paper structure to tell your friends fortune or misfortune. Fortune telling is the practice of predicting information about a person’s life, their past, present and future. A form of divination historically associated with gypsy culture and Renaissance magic. I remember as a child making paper fortune teller’s in the playground with kind and cruel endings for people to chose from dependant on which colour or number they selected from the folds of paper. My Fortune Tellers today play with the structure of the origami object. This time however they are made from photographs of actors/actresses whose faces have been distorted from the folding of paper, whereby the fortune teller becomes the subject and object which sits in the palm of your hand.
