About The Artwork

Glossy white dimensional circles proliferate in layers over the canvas. Pristine and pure their flawless appearance is shaken by the emergence of a small handful of vivid orange mutineers. Surrounded by a shiny white painted timber frame this is a work that oozed both sophistication and caution. Contagion is a response to growing concerns that COVID 19 maybe not ever be wiped out completely. The possibility of the virus cropping up despite stringent measures to contain it is high. This work is fitted with D rings and wire for immediate hanging. On the back, you will find my signature, initials, title, and year. It is registered on the NRAA (National Registry for Australian artists). The work comes with details of the registration and a Certificate of Authenticity. THE LOCKDOWN COLLECTION   “Paintings that believe they are Sculptures” Layers of dried paint that is surplus from my other artworks provide the starting point for these highly dimensional and uniquely sculptural works. This series, seen through the lens of a global pandemic, is a response to what would otherwise be discarded.

Artist Statement “When the paint is dry my work is just beginning”. The thought that paint could be capable of independence from the canvas has been the driving force behind Julee’s art practice. It led to her process of creating paintings on plastic waiting for the paint to dry before she removes it. The unsupported material has an inherent flexibility that allows Julee to investigate her interest in textile, collage, and sculptural techniques. Through cutting, layering, moulding, weaving, and gluing, each creation is the result of many hours of meticulous and detailed work. An artist since childhood, Julee holds a BFA (Sculpture and Painting) from Curtin University, Perth. She is also the author of the book Sculptural Secrets for Mosaic (Schiffer Publishing Ltd, USA). Her works can be found in collections, both public and private, worldwide.
