About The Artwork

My latest work is informed by my interest in growing spaces, gardens and the natural world and explores the boundaries between the wild and the cultivated, between nature and artifice. The abiding mood of my work is one of dark playfulness and eerie beauty. I am inspired by, amongst many other things, Indian miniature paintings, medieval illuminations, the work of Edward Gorey, Japanese byobu screens, and, often, my dreams. I seek to create a strong sense both of mystery and humour in my work as those are the feelings I most enjoy in looking at my favourite art. My material of choice is usually paper; I am a lifelong paper obsessive and have amassed a collection of pieces hailing from all over the world. I am continually fascinated by this material's potential and its associations with the world of books, another passion of mine. I paint or draw onto different kinds of paper - watercolour, pastel, washi - and then, using a scalpel I hand cut tiny pieces and layer them up into diorama-like collages, glueing them down with acid-free glue as I go.

Hannah Battershell was born in Cardiff in 1983, and grew up in Malawi, Zimbabwe and London and now lives and works in Bristol. Her pieces take many forms - from dreamy cyanotypes to intricately layered paper landscapes, to diorama-like scenes in tobacco tins, to buttons that are inked, painted and scratched into miniscule ghostly portraits - but are all linked by Hannah’s distinct style and wit. Exquisitely detailed, Hannah’s work asks you to peer up close into its eerie but playful world. Each piece is like the fragment of a lost story, retaining a deliberate sense of mystery, a space in the narrative for the viewer's imagination. Hannah’s work is informed by an interest in growing spaces and the natural world, Japanese byobu screens, Indian miniatures, Medieval illuminations, her dreams, and the things she reads. As well as coming from the materials themselves, inspiration might also come from a half-remembered quotation or something seen in a smudge or torn scrap of paper.
