2021 Art Trends: Marking Time
Artists have been marking the passage of time since prehistoric cave paintings—depicting seasonal migrations and celestial events. Indeed, research published in 2005 suggests that every major civilization independently developed a form of sundial—a useful instrument, to be sure, and no less a sculptural object. Today, artists are turning to nature’s rhythms for steadiness and inspiration, helping us to calibrate our senses to a constant beyond our immediate surroundings. This collection presents artists giving time a tangible form, whether capturing sequential moments on film, casting shadows with sculpture, distilling memories into many layers of paint, embracing the beauty of aging with portraiture, or cataloging exhalations of breath.
