I Still Cast A Shadow
Thumbing through family photo albums or scrolling through my photos, mothers are often absent. I’m not in the photos – I’m taking them. My mother and grandmother are similarly missing from documents of our childhoods. Yet our shadows appear, evidence of our presence. We exist! We are not gone. We are here, ever hovering with the camera, with a snack, with a wipe. I still cast a shadow.
My materials are embedded with meaning. This series began with an idea about shadows, which led to work using light and shadow through cyanotype. It evolved to include pieces made with ephemeral play-doh, which carries connections to both domestic labor and childhood.
