Edward St series,
A major preoccupation of my work since the early 90’s has been the figure and the self-portrait. Painting is a process by which I come to terms with my own mortality after the loss of both parents and my only brother. This painting is part of a series collectively entitled Edward St which is one of the University of Brighton buildings I work in. I was inspired by a space which created a palpable Baroque tension. I felt like I was walking into a Francis Bacon painting and I have obsessively made over 450 self-portraits over the last four years exploring this image of myself taking a selfie.
