Assateague Island

The barrier islands of Assateague and Chincoteague in the Atlantic Ocean shelter Maryland and Virginia from wild seas and are home to some of the country's most stunning wild horses. The most probable idea is that they were survivors of the Spanish shipwreck of the La Galga in 1750. The 37-mile-long Assateague Island National Seashore is a magical place. Brown pelicans skim the Atlantic's surface, wild horses graze the marshes, and birds follow the waves.
