In 2020, the English Lake District marked two important anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth's birth and the centenary of the death of Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley. Wordsworth was a famous Romantic Poet Laureate, while Rawnsley was an Anglican priest and one of the founders of the National Trust. Both were passionate about preserving the natural beauty of the Lake District. To celebrate this significant year, I embarked on an art project "Wordsworth, Rawnsley and Lake District" with the support of the Arts Council England Emergency Response Fund. The project culminated in a solo exhibition at Rydal Mount in 2021. This artwork is part of a nature-themed series in the project entitled 'On a Sunny Day'. The stone walls that weave through the rolling hills are an integral part of the Lake District's elegant landscape. They are silent witnesses, so to speak, to the history of this land over hundreds of years. I created this series through on-site research at Rydal Mount & Gardens and the surrounding areas in my daily life. I explored the sense of place in the garden that Wordsworth himself designed and linked it to my personal experiences, opening up the possibility for a dialogue that transcends time and space.

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
