More than ever, I am aware of being a very small part of the universe. We humans are not observers of the world, we are caught up in its ebbs and flows. Control is an illusion. There is no way to disentangle the human from the natural. I wanted to know what would happen if I brought two things together by chance. I discovered an explosion of questions. Something that could be a beginning or an end. A sublime moment of stillness where I’m standing on the edge of a reality and watching it remake itself.

Emma Godfrey Pigott (b. 1979, UK) is a Swiss-based visual artist and writer living in the Alps. She is currently studying a Master of Fine Arts at the University of South Wales studying under Lisa Barnard and Mark Durden. Prior to this she was self-taught and one of the founding members of Natasha Caruana’s ‘Work Show Grow’ artist education platform. She was a finalist in the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) International Photography Exhibition 2019 and won an Honourable Mention in the 14th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards. Her work has been exhibited at FotoNostrom Barcelona, RPS House Bristol and at the 2023 Bienal de Foto do Porto Portugal. Her writing has been published on the RPS Hundred Heroines blog. The landscape is a key aspect in Emma’s practice: for her it becomes a character and stage upon which to explore the experience of being in the world. Her research focuses on liminality and New Materialism as a paradigm for understanding the changes that are happening in our world especially due to the climate crisis. Working across a range of lens-based media and alternative processes, she plays with the capture and surface of the photograph, allowing chance and generative, collaborative strategies to influence the outcome. She is interested in how exhibition spaces can affect visual meaning and aspires to work with installation and sculpture in the presentation of her work.
