My work is guided by a theme of transformation. I utilize basic visual elements throughout each piece in order to help convey this idea. I sincerely believe that lines, shapes, colors and other parts of the visual vocabulary can be a metaphor for hope and possibility. "Sweet Thing" begins with a framework and evolves over time. I am inspired by the effects that result in applying layers of color and altering the lines and shapes in the composition space. There is great power in this idea, and I hope to translate my thoughts to the viewer. My influences in making the painting include architecture, nature and music. The title comes from the Van Morrison song “Sweet Thing”. This song resonates with me, as well as fits the emotion of the artwork. The colors of this particular painting are vibrant and carry a richness that also feels a little sweet. I hope to engage the viewer emotionally and also have them understand the symbolism behind my choices. I work mainly with oil paint and sometimes mix enamel. The fluidity and quicker drying time of enamel works well in certain paintings. Although they can act differently, the interaction between these two mediums can create a desirable result. I enjoy the layering of oil paint. Sometimes there are accidents, and I have come to trust that these will find their way down the right path.

I was born 1974 and raised in Texas. In 1997, I began experimenting with painting after a summer job at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. In 2000, I began assisting family and friends at the Sicardi Gallery. After enrolling in art classes at the community college, I studied painting at University of Houston. The experience in formal art studio classes was wonderful, as well as teaching in secondary school for 14 years. I consider a self-taught foundation to be the strength in driving my choices. I often work with a mixture of materials, but painting is still my foundation. I have had the opportunity to exhibit work in various solo and group shows, as well as collaborate with dance and theatre productions. My work is part of private and public collections in Texas and around the United States. Teaching programs at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Maine College of Art were important to my development. I am represented by Blue Print Gallery in Dallas, TX. As I begin the next phase of my career and studio practice, I look forward to more projects that challenge me and help my growth as an artist.
